How religion is shaping world affairs

In late February, some 800 people packed the downtown Camden Opera House and a few other remote locations to hear a mighty lineup of speakers discuss a topic of keen interest: Religion as a Force in World Affairs. The occasion was the 21st annual Camden Conference.

Starting Friday night and continuing through the weekend of Feb. 23-24, panels took on subjects ranging from The Role of Fundamentalists in Recent U.S. Foreign Policy and Religious Identities in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict to The Clash Between Sunni and Shia Muslims Across the Middle East and Religious and Ethical Challenges in Seeking Global Social Justice.

Panelists included recognized experts such as Rev. J. Bryan Hehir of Harvard University’s Kennedy School; Andrew Preston, Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge University; and Andrew Natsios, Professor at Georgetown University and former head of Agency for International Development.

The Camden Conference describes itself as a "non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues." Past topics include discussions about Europe’s trends and global relations; issues involving the Middle East; the influence of the news media in shaping U.S foreign policy; and U.S.-Japan relations. Speakers are always among the best and brightest in the field under discusson.

Seats in the Opera House for the most recent conference cost $225 for the entire forum. Tickets for individual sessions are less, as are tickets for remote locations, where the panel presentations are beamed in. Most years, smaller discussions of related topics are held locally for a week or two in advance of the main conference.

Not a bad way to spend a cold and snowy weekend!
